Agents of byte are among the most sophisticated intelligence agents in the sector. They don't leave a trail of bodies behind them. In fact, they don't tend to leave any kind of trail at all behind them.

They are officially known as Information Gathering Agents but more generally just Gatherers. They have absolutely no enforcement powers, even on their home world. Their interest is information and the people who have it. Information of all kinds is of interest, being it economic, military or social. The knowledge that the Deputy Director for Sanitation of the Health Police is having an illicit affair is just as potentially useful as knowing the deployment of Patrol ships in the Mecca system.
